Setting the scene
It was the morning sunlight that captured the scene so well. The house was in disarray, we still hadn’t finished redecorating and refurbishing, and my crumpled bed was evidence of yet another poor nights sleep punctuated by our five barking rescue dogs! But as I sat and looked out of my window at the blue skies and red tiled roofs in the morning light, I said to myself “It doesn’t get much better than this!” Even in winter time the sun was shining.
We had purchased the home two years earlier as a holiday home and weekend retreat. I had always wanted to live in Italy and yet here I was in Bulgaria! We had priced up properties in both countries and Bulgaria had won hands down. I hadn’t regretted our decision.
The scenery is breathtaking – everything from mountains to rugged coastlines, forests, and wide open plains. The country has a small population so you can walk for miles in your own paradise. Like Italy there are ancient antiquities in abundance. The food is second to none, and it is very affordable to eat out. Traditions and customs are alive and thriving: We have experienced some amazing events here. The people have welcomed us with open arms. There is no shortage of sunshine – even in wintertime. And the red tiled roofs and blue skies that I had loved so much about Italy, abound here also! You could be anywhere in the Mediterranean when you look out of the window.
What is it about red tiled roofs and blue skies that lifts the spirits?
What is it about blue skies and red tiled roofs that transport me instantly to being on holiday ? I suppose that roofs in England tend to be grey, with little contrast against the often rainy skies. Having lived there for most of my life, I am very familiar with the feeling one gets when opening the curtains in the morning to see yet more grey. Red, on the other hand, is such an uplifting and energising colour, made even more striking against a vibrant blue backdrop. We have often commented that SAD must be very rare here due to all this sun, even in winter time!
Suffice to say, that so in love with the country we have become, that we now own four such properties here – each one with terracotta tiles, and each one under blue skies for most of the year.

Winter letting
Two of the properties are situated on beautiful resorts close to the sea and within a short distance from the ancient town of Nesebar. Both apartements have sea views. They are used all summer as holiday rentals, but also make ideal wintertime retreats. If you are working remotely, or don’t have to work at all, then why not enjoy some winter sunshine on the Black Sea coast.
